Two More Turkish Food Products Gain Protected Geographical Indication Status in the EU

edremit zeytinyağı and milas yağlı zeytini got pdo registration

In a significant development for Turkish culinary heritage, two more products have recently secured Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) status within the European Union. Edremit Zeytinyağı and Milas Yağlı Zeytini, both cherished staples in Turkish cuisine, join the ranks of esteemed products recognized and protected under EU law.

The inclusion of Edremit Zeytinyağı, an exquisite olive oil variety originating from the Edremit region in western Turkey, and Milas Yağlı Zeytini, renowned for its distinctively flavorful olives hailing from the Milas region in the south, brings the total number of registered Turkish geographical indications in the European Union to 14.

Protected Geographical Indications and Protected Designations of Origin are a testament to the unique qualities, reputation, and heritage associated with a product originating from a specific region. This recognition ensures that only products genuinely originating in that designated area, and meeting strict production criteria, can bear the distinguished label.

The addition of these two products not only safeguards their authenticity but also highlights the rich tapestry of Turkish gastronomy. It serves as a source of pride for local communities whose time-honored traditions contribute to the exceptional quality and taste of these culinary treasures.

Both Edremit Zeytinyağı and Milas Yağlı Zeytini have garnered a global following for their exceptional taste and quality. The European Union’s recognition further solidifies these products’ international status, offering consumers authenticity and origin assurance.

The protection of these Turkish products under the PDO framework signifies a mutual commitment between Turkey and the EU to honor and safeguard cultural and agricultural heritage. It also fosters economic development in the regions concerned, promoting sustainable agricultural practices and providing a platform for local producers to thrive.

With this recent addition, Turkey continues strengthening its presence in the EU’s protected geographical indications roster, showcasing its rich and diverse culinary heritage. As consumers increasingly value authenticity and traceability in their food choices, these designations offer a tangible link between the plate and the land it comes from.

The European Union’s recognition of Edremit Zeytinyağı and Milas Yağlı Zeytini reinforces the global appeal of Turkish culinary traditions. It paves the way for a deeper appreciation of the craftsmanship and dedication that goes into producing these exceptional food products.

As these cherished Turkish treasures find their place among the esteemed ranks of Protected Geographical Indications in the EU, they add flavor to the culinary landscape and serve as a testament to the enduring connection between food, culture, and place.
